課程概述

The objective of the auditing course is to help each student obtain the skill, knowledge, and personal characteristics necessary to practice successfully as an auditor. This course is an intensive conceptual and applied introduction to assurance services in society. Topics include assurance services provided by Certified Public Accountants (CPA’s) and non-CPAs. This course is organized around a framework of providing you with a foundation in the requirements for providing high quality assurance. This course emphasizes not only acquiring knowledge, but also skills and attitudes required for success in the accounting profession. Two key attitudes required for this course are: 1) Intellectual curiosity and 2) Taking responsibility for your own learning. You should know the macro-level learning objectives embedded within the course’s three modules:
• Module 1 should help you come to understand that:
(1) Assurance services are judgment-driven services provided by independent professionals that improve the quality of information for decision makers. The demand for and supply of assurance are influenced by cultural, economic (e.g., industry-specific), regulatory, and technological factors.
(2) When information asymmetry, conflicting interests, and profit motives exist, assurance demand endogenously arises. Properties of such demand depends in part on both assurer and assuree characteristics and on properties of alternative mechanisms that could improve information quality.
(3) A key assurance service is attestation, which involves examining and reporting on the veracity of assertions. Organizations make different types of assertions. The extent to which assertee and asserter organizations demand third-party attestation depends, in part, on attributes of assertions. One form of attestation is financial-statement audits.
• Module 2 should help you come to understand a conceptual framework by which assurance professionals can assess, evaluate, and manage assurance-related risks and evidence. More specifically, you should come to understand:
(1) that inferential concepts and practical tools exist and can facilitate your reasoning about properties of risk (e.g., likelihood and significance) and evidence (e.g., persuasiveness, diagnosticity, predictive validity)
(2) that evolving standards-based risk models exist within generally accepted auditing standards (GAAS). These well-known models attempt to decompose audit risk with an underlying goal to help CPA assurers plan and perform financial statement audits, and
(3) that many assurance professionals use broad strategic-system risk models embellish and arguably correct some deficiencies of standards-based risk models. Strategic-systems models help assurers identify organizationz’ strategic and business risks, which stem from cultural, economic (e.g., industry-specific), regulatory, and technological factors. These risks, and organizations' responses to them, influence the quality (i.e., the relevance and reliability) of organizations' performance measures and attendant assertions. Assurance providers must assess the implications of such risks and organizational responses to determine the nature and extent of evidence needed when delivering specific kinds of assurance services.
• Module 3 reinforces previously introduced concepts. It requires you to design and execute a series of evidence-gathering procedures and to assess the implications of obtained evidence for an organization’s assertions. Within module 3 you should come to understand that:
(1) Attesters draw upon frameworks to assess and attest to organizations' internal control strengths and weaknesses. Even when assertions about controls are not the primary topic of an attest engagement, evidence about their design and operational integrity can provide indirect verification of assertions. Weak controls can elevate the risk of materially misstated assertions. Such risk must be reduced to an acceptably low level via the use of direct "substantive" verification procedures;
(2) The nature and benefits of different kinds of risk-assessment procedures (e.g., analytical procedures, confirmations, tracing, and vouching) affects the degree to which different kinds of misstatements are susceptible to detection (non-existence, incompleteness, mis-valuation, inadequate disclosure, etc.), and
(3) The art and science of interpreting evidence and aggregating likely/possible amounts (or degrees) of misstatement requires much professional judgment. Professional judgment also guides the assessment of the materiality of misstatements.

課程目標
In the first semester, we will cover Module 1 and most of Module 2, and the rest of Module 2 and Module 3 will be covered in the second semester. Because assurance professionals regularly work in teams, the team project is an important component of this course. The purpose of the team auditing project is to help you develop the skill-set needed to plan and design audit engagements, which was assigned in the first semester. Strategic Systems Auditing cases will be assigned in the second semester. Basically, this will include obtaining a detailed understanding of the company and industry, developing risk assessments, and designing audit tests. Details are expected to be provided in the second semester.
課程要求
3.1: Mid-term Exam:
Exams allow assessment of both conceptual and technical knowledge as well as your ability to communicate. The format will include essays, problems, short answers, and multiple-choice questions. Any student who misses a midterm exam must provide me with what I judge to be an unavoidable, reasonably verifiable excuse in order to be eligible to having the midterm-exam weight assigned to the final exam for calculating the course grade. Otherwise, any student missing an exam will receive a score of zero for the missed exam.

3.2: Final Exam:
Approximately certain percentage of final exam will be comprehensive. The format will be similar to that the midterms. An unexcused absence on the final will result in a final exam grade of zero. A conflict final examination will be available only if you provide me with what I deem to be an unavoidable, verifiable excuse.

3.3: Quizzes
Two quizzes, usually one week before midterm and final exams, will be given by TA.

3.4: In-Class Group Exercises:
Because assurance professionals regularly work in teams, team assignments/exercises are an important component of this course. The in-class exercises (to be assigned) will be done in groups. Participation in these exercises (which could include brief ad hoc presentations) will be reflected in the professional behavior/participation component of your grade.

3.5: Cases in Strategic-Systems Auditing
3 cases will be selected from Cases in Strategic-Systems Auditing published by KPMG and University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. These cases are designed to be better equipped you to critically analyze a business and apply the essential knowledge in strategic system auditing to perform a better audit.

3.6: Class Participation and Professional Behavior:
You can improve your grade by actively participating in and preparing for class. Your performance on these items will influence your participation grade. Participation credit will be assigned at my discretion and will also be based on your attention and attitude in class, the quality of your participation in class discussions and projects. It is important that you attend class and participate to improve your understanding of the relevant topics.

Guidelines for Group Presentation for BMST and Cases in Strategic-Systems Auditing:
(83dc) Presenting group should prepare PPT slides submitted to Ceiba platform at least 2 days before presentation, while the group asking questions is responsible for asking questions based on the slides provided by the presenting group.
(83dc) Before class, each presenting group should prepare handouts (e.g., PowerPoint slides in Fine Print format), and distribute their handouts to the class and me. They also should practice the presentation.
(83dc) Presenters usually will have the floor for about 20-25 minutes, depending on the manuscript (BMST) or the Cases. Following presentation, the Q&A session will usually last about 10 minutes.
(83dc) Any student or instructor can ask questions and direct them to any specific group member. Members should attempt to answer questions directed to them before other group members respond. I will evaluate the quality of students' questions as part of the class participation component of your grade. Each student should actively ask questions during group presentation. Your group will earn points by performing well both during your planned presentation and while answering questions.
(83dc) To receive a high grade, the group should go beyond merely presenting available information and critically analyze the topic. Generally, all members will receive the same grade.
(83dc) If the free-rider problems become severe, the group evaluation form will be required to turn in by each group member.

Note that class participation includes both attendance and participation in classroom discussion. Simply attending class does not mean that you will get a high grade for participation.
